VATICAN CITY, 2012 (Zenit.org).- On Saturday, Benedict XVI’s secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, presented the Holy Father with the 2012 edition of the “Annuario Pontificio” or pontifical yearbook, and the “Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae”.
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turkish gunman who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, wants to convert to Christianity, according to his lawyer. Agca, seen in 2000, served 19 years in an Italian prison for the attack on the pontiff. He’s currently in prison in Turkey for killing a journalist, a slaying that came before the attack on the pope. He is due to be released at the start of next year.
