In this modern era of altered history and political correctness, our Southern history and heritage often fall victim to distortions and half-truths. Unaware of the facts, people are easy prey to those who would use them as tools in their sleazy political agenda. This is what happened January 17 in Columbia, South Carolina, when hundreds of people marched demanding that the Confederate flag be removed from Statehouse grounds. Since most were outsiders, (Detroit, etc), what right do they have to come here, making demands, without full knowledge of our heritage and history?
Here are some facts. Of the 224 years that slavery was legal in this country, the Stars and Stripes or the British flag flew every one of those years. The Confederate flag flew just four years. In 1776 all 13 colonies held slaves and slavery was guaranteed in the Constitution. Not one Confederate ship brought in slaves and the majority of slaves came in through northern ports and sold by northern slave dealers. If you want to hate a flag of slavery, why not the Stars and Stripes? The British brought in the majority of slaves. Hate the Union Jack. How about the Dutch, Portuguese or Spanish flags? All slave trading countries.
Following the politically correct logic of today of guilty by association, you would have to ban the Stars and Stripes since the KKK frequently marches using only the U.S. flag and not the Confederate flag. Other groups that the politically correct crowd finds offensive also use both the Stars and Stripes and the Christian flag so condemn all the flags and be consistent!
That would be rather ridiculous, wouldn’t it. Easier to just condemn one flag.
Since about 75% of the South was Ulster-Scottish or Scotch Irish, the Confederate battle flag was designed after the national flag of Scotland to represent their Celtic heritage. The cross of Saint Andrew represents Christ and displays faith in the sovereign God of heaven. Lincoln and the Radical Republicans who were the driving force behind the war believed in a secular humanist philosophy but the South was predominantly Christian and they chose a flag which represented their faith and heritage.
It can be proved that Lincoln had no desire to free the slaves and did not believe in equality between the races. Before the war the South funded about 80% of all taxes. The North wanted a 40% tariff and the South said no, you can have 10%. Lincoln said, okay, you keep the slaves and we’ll keep the tariff. The war was about money for the North, freedom from oppression for the South. Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation did not free one slave. As a matter of fact, Lincoln had no authority over Southern slaves, the only slaves covered in the Proclamation. The Proclamation was a political ploy. There were slaveholders in the Northern armies fighting the South whose slaves continued in their bondage.
The Confederate flag honors those who fought for their families, homes and freedoms. They fought for constitutional rights. The flag represents those who opposed unlimited federal government. When the South lost, the federal government became stronger and now look at the mess we are in today. Government is in every aspect of our lives. The Confederate flag represents a limited view of government and freedom from tyranny for all people of all races. That’s why the East German people used it when they tore down the Berlin Wall. That’s why the people of Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and the Ukraine adopted and used it as they freed themselves from the tyranny of the Soviet Union. That’s why Quebec used the Confederate flag when they attempted to secede from Canada. Not because these peoples wanted to enslave Africans but because these people understand that the Confederate flag represents liberty and freedom and independence from governmental tyranny for all people, regardless of race.
Blacks knew and understood this powerful message once and history shows that many blacks embraced their own Confederate dead. Sadly, emotionally charged politically correct rhetoric has turned the noble sacrifice of over 250,000 Confederate soldiers of both races into a mockery. One of the disturbing results of this twisted history is the NAACP covering the statute of George Washington during their rally, finding him too offensive for their people. If they would just take the time to study the truth they would find that Washington, as did Robert E. Lee, inherited his slaves. Washington, detesting the institution of slavery and working within the constraints of his day, ordered them freed upon his death. His freed slaves remained loyal to his family long after his death.
Those of us who cherish and honor the memory of our ancestors who sacrificed for our country will not hide our heads in shame just because they fought under the flag of the Confederacy. Our Confederate soldiers fought and died for this country. Their sacrifice is no less noble than those who perished on Flanders Field, the shores of Normandy, the swamps of Vietnam or the desert of Iraq, probably more. We own them our respect and gratitude.

Hughes says “[l]et America be the dream the dreamers dreamed.” For so long, it is the American political left which contends that we have only allowed America to be the dream of the few and of the powerful, that it is the very ideology embraced by people like Langston Hughes which would provide respite for the downtrodden and average American alike. Now, however, with the manifestation of that ideology on the horizon, we have cast aside the dreams of the average American to pave way for a “bigger” picture. A picture that is only “big” when it comes to government, and quite narrow when it comes to the American people.
We see the American people rising up and telling their government “NO!” again and again only to be served with the burden of more government in their lives. Today, a revolution is brewing in America, where the voice of the people will surely conquer the conquest of the few and a new vision is bound to unfold.
Tomorrow, we will not see world peace. Tomorrow, we will neither see the end of natural disasters nor those unnatural disasters brought on by the bloody implementation of fanaticism. Tomorrow, however, we do have opportunity. We have the opportunity to have government work responsibly for the people and not against us. We have the opportunity to give the American people a voice, but the path to this is surely less traveled.
In order to have a voice in the government, we must do what our forefathers did and raise our own. We must tell our elected officials that we do not want a government intervention in our lives. Not when it comes to health care, not when it comes to personal spending, and certainly not when it comes to family.
And we’re doing it. President Barack Obama’s health care fiasco has begun to hit a number of potholes en route to an unprecedented government expansion, potholes caused by the American people rising up and explaining to their elected officials that the American people will remain silent no more. At the health care town hall meetings, the American people caused both members of Congress and Senate to reconsider President Obama’s health care agenda and, with the same veracity and an even brighter fate, we must find the resolve to not only cause our elected officials to rethink their relationship with the people in this democratic republic, but surely to reinvent it altogether. The concept of representation, it seems, does not come easily to these people. And that’s not all they need to reinvent.
We must push our elected officials to reinvent more than a national deficit, and indeed reinvent their national vision. Langston Hughes and so many like him sought the respite of communism because he felt that true representation could not be had in his America. And while the stain of communism has certainly left its mark upon the world, Hughes’ feeling that “[w]here never kings connive nor tyrants scheme/that any man be crushed by one above” could be seen not only in the light of class warfare, but in the light of the struggle in which ordinary America–not black America, not white America–is currently entrenched against the ruling class in Washington, D.C.
That American vision, inspired by a people aware of its history and inclemently fighting for its future, is what Ronald Reagan rose to champion, and what Barack Obama has continued to fight against.
Once we have seized the opportunity and have made our voice, vision and values clear, the path does not end there. We must pursue our politicians keeping them accountable to the new American Vision, and furthermore the American people. Recreating the successes of 1994 and 2000 is one thing, but maintaining the message by which we achieved such victory is another. We must remove the façade our politicians have facilitated to keep us out, and make it perfectly, unabiguously clear that We The People are here to stay. It’s time to take back American politics by getting rid of career politicians and electing the common American to serve their country.
For that, I propose a three-step process. It’s as simple as one-two-three or, better yet, U-S-A:
Langston Hughes was thought by many to be a racial chauvinist, and as America moved closer and closer to a truly integrated society, his writings were perceived by many to carry less and less weight. Yet those few lines of Let America Be America Again stick out in my mind, highlighted from the rest. As unconventional as his worldview may have been, and as different as his course may have been in getting there, it was nonetheless an American dream that Hughes sought for African Americans.
Like Hughes, Martin Luther King, Jr.–a Republican, by the way–also had a dream. And it was his dream that changed the American attitude toward race, that let us pursue a future for America where the stroke of justice was written with the understanding of our past, where our foundation is our future and the American people are the dreamers who reinvent tomorrow. In order for ordinary, average Americans to prevail in this current quest for freedom, we must not only look to our past but we must understand it. We must understand the principles which made America what it is, and strive to continue rather than transform them.

Obama fearing a revolution against him by the states, has moved swiftly by nationalizing nearly all National Guard Forces in multiple states; Georgia, Alabama, Kansas, Minnesota, Tennessee, Virginia, Louisiana, South Carolina – to name a few. The Governors of the Great States of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia still have under their Command-and-Control the State Defense Forces to go against U.S. Federal forces should the need arise. Also important to note: There are NO U.S. laws prohibiting National Guard troops from also joining their State’s Defense Forces. This dilemma occurred during the Civil War with many “citizen soldiers” choosing to serve their states instead of the Federal Government.
Obama is angered by the several State Governors who have reestablished “State Defense Forces.” These forces are described as: “State Defense Forces (also known as State Guards, State Military Reserves, State Militias) in the United States are military units that operate under the sole authority of a state government; they are not regulated by the National Guard Bureau nor are they part of the Army National Guard of the United States. State Defense Forces are authorized by state and federal law and are under the command of the governor of each state. State Defense Forces are distinct from their state’s National Guard in that they cannot become federal entities.”
Mr. Obama is fearful of these State Defense Forces, in that he does not have control of said forces, and with the U.S. Military stretched to near breaking from multiple deployments and theatre actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, these State military forces would be under the direct command and authority of the Governors in which states have said forces. In essence, the Governors would have “de facto control” of the United States.

The two Governors leading this move are: Tim Pawlenty, Governor of Minnesota; and Rick Perry, Governor of Texas. Both of these State Governors stated they have: “…deep fear the President is destroying their Nation.” Governor Pawlenty’s fear of Obama is that since Obama took office he has appeased America’s enemies and has shunned some of America’s strongest allies, especially Israel. Governor Perry has declared that Obama is punishing his State of Texas by dumping tens-of-thousands of illegal Mexican immigrants into the cities and small towns of Texas. Governor Perry further recently stated: “If Barack Obama’s Washington doesn’t stop being so oppressive, Texans might feel compelled to renounce their American citizenry and secede from the union.”
