US Attorney Bill Johnston announced his resignation over

frustrations with the Justice Department, and specifically with

the way he was treated when he expressed concerns over a possible

government cover-up of evidence in the Branch Davidian case.

It was Johnston who helped write the controversial search warrant

used by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to conduct an

assault on David Koresh and his followers Feb. 28, 1993 in Waco,

Texas. He later helped the government convict nine of the

surviving Branch Davidians.

On April 19, 1993, the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas was

raided by the FBI, and more than 70 people died, some by fire, others

by gunshot. The Waco controversy was rekindled in 1999 when

Michael McNulty, a documentary film producer, discovered shell casings

from a tear gas round that had incendiary characteristics, something the

FBI had stated they had not used on the climactic day of the standoff.

McNulty’s film, “Waco: The Rules of Engagement,”

also showed infrared film taken by an FBI aircraft of what appeared to be

gunfire aimed into the compound and coming from FBI-controlled areas.
