When “Diversity” Means “No White People Allowed”: Backfire Racism At Puget Sound College.

racism

At the South Puget Sound Community College a group called “The Staff, Faculty and Administrators of Color” sent out an email to all of the college’s employees inviting them to an anti-racist event.

The kicker? White people were specifically uninvited. “If you want to create space for white folks to meet and work on racism, white supremacy, and white privilege to better our campus community and yourselves, please feel free to do just that,” the invitation read.

This video is from the local news report about the situation. The best part is when the black school administrator condemns the invitation, which is then defended in the report by the extravagantly pierced and oh-so-lily-white student who wrote the letter.

I’m not sure the Onion could write satire this good.

Part 1

It does say something about the strange views some have on “diversity.” I would liken this to those who want to promote religious diversity and tolerance by driving all religion (or, at least, Christianity) from the public square.

To me, diversity means inclusiveness, not exclusion. Tolerance is not driving views and people some find objectionable from the public square, but inviting them all in and asking that controversial people/ideas be tolerated.

Part 2

Today tolerance – whether it’s in the form of diversity events that don’t allow diversity, or “civility” rules that outlaw provocative speech – seems to mean not having to tolerate people or ideas you don’t like.
