Early as 2012 the Israeli daily Haaretz revealed that 37 percent of Israelis sought to migrate from Israel.

It quoted a study by Tel Aviv University as saying that more than 100,000 Israelis held European citizenship in 2007, which showed a 100-percent increase in comparison to 2000.

Meanwhile, many Israelis cite the obligation to serve in the army as among the reasons behind their immigration. Israeli men are required to serve three years in the military, while women serve two years.

Israelis look to Europe, particularly at a time of war with Ashkenazi Jews – Jews of Eastern European origin – looking for ways to obtain Polish, Hungarian and German citizenship while Mizrahi Jews – Jews of Middle Eastern origin – seek citizenship in Spain or France.

“There’s always an increase in the number of applications at times of crisis,” says attorney Dan Assan, who specializes in obtaining German and Austrian citizenship for Israelis.

“…The decision to emigrate from the country and to start a complicated process of obtaining foreign citizenship is long and complex. It could be that we will see the real impact of the war in Gaza on Israeli migration to Europe only a long time from now,” Assan added.

The Israeli military unleashed aerial attacks on Gaza in early July and later expanded its military campaign with a ground invasion of the Palestinian strip. Over 2,130 Palestinians, including around 570 children, lost their lives and some 11,000 were injured in the raids.

Tel Aviv says 72 Israelis were killed in the conflict, but the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says the number is much higher.
